What brown maple is like
Brown maple is the practical choice, and the one most often specified when the sill is going to be stained dark or painted. Its tight, uniform grain takes colour evenly rather than blotching the way softer woods can, so a dark stain lands flat and consistent across the whole piece.
It is the least expensive of the four hardwoods here. If the finish schedule calls for a heavily pigmented stain or a painted sill, paying for walnut or white oak buys you grain you are about to cover up.

Choosing brown maple for a sill
Where it fits
Painted and heavily stained sills. Budget-conscious jobs where the sill needs to match trim rather than stand out. Multi-window runs where material cost multiplies quickly.
Where it does not
Where you want visible grain character. Brown maple under a clear or natural finish is quiet — that is the point of it, but if you want the sill to read as timber, oak or walnut will do more.
